Each month the Special Benevolence portion of our offering envelopes is designated to a UCC, local or special Mt. Zion ministry. The Mission Core Team prayerfully establishes this list annually.

Compassion York Food Run: Several times each year we prepare a meal at church. We have purchased special storage containers to keep food warm and transport it to two locations in downtown York to serve. We serve 150-250 people.

Ronald McDonald House: Fondly referred to as “Cooks on the Road” several Sunday’s each year a group of 6 to 8 people travel to the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey to prepare dinner for the guests. Usually there are 40-50 family members staying there who have children being cared for at Hershey Medical Center.

Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen: Referred to as “Chop & Peel” as people meet at 6 PM on a Monday evening to peel potatoes, chop onions, carrots, and peppers to make beef stew for the soup kitchen located on S. George St. in downtown York.

The BE-Event is coming to Mt. Zion this fall!

We are calling this a BE-Event because we will emphasize being instead of doing. We will focus on being in community, being in fellowship with one another, being in Christian relationship , being in discernment through prayer, and being invitational.
We are just beginning to create our “be” list. Over the course of six weeks, from October 14th through November 18th, we plan to offer a variety of small groups. Something for everyone!
Thus far, we have a men’s breakfast group, a drama group, a prayer walkers group, a Bible study group and more. Watch our BE-Event poster for new groups and consider which one is for you.

Chicken BBQ — May 5, 2012

It’s another Mt. Zion Chicken BBQ!! We’ll be selling tickets for the May 5 Chicken BBQ after each service on April 8, 15, 22 and 29. The cost is again $8.00 for 1/2 chicken, baked potato, applesauce and a roll. If you want to take a block of 10 tickets to sell, we’ll extend credit! All funds or unsold tickets should be returned on Sunday, April 29.

Easter Egg Hunt 2012 (and 2013)

A hearty THANK YOU to EVERYONE who helped out with the Easter Egg Hunt March 25! Whether you donated candy, helped set up / tear down the Fellowship Hall, were part of the Welcoming Team, helped to stuff / hide eggs, were part of the kitchen crew that day, or helped us by praying for good weather, ALL of your efforts are appreciated! Approximately 120 children enjoyed the event and many of them were not from Mt. Zion families, so we had a VERY successful community outreach! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Sharing the Good News! We need your help to do so. Next year at our community egg hunt, we would like to hand out the Resurrection Eggs to each family that attends. 20:30 has made these in the past and given them to our own Mt. Zion families. We would like to spread the news even farther. As the Easter season comes to an end this year, we would love to have donations of plastic eggs. The eggs can be extras from your own supply or eggs you find for us on clearance in after Easter sales. We will also need to collect cardboard egg cartons, so please save those for us too. A sample set of the Resurrection Eggs and a box to collect them will be put out after the Easter holiday. We will not be collecting items for in the eggs until closer to the time. April Special Benevolence Offering

April Special Benevolence Offering: Bell Socialization of York. Bell provides housing support for persons with intellectual disability and mental illness. They are the only emergency shelter for homeless families in York County. Opened in 1986, the emergency shelter has 11 bedrooms and houses 40 people per night. The cost of running this shelter is $600/day. Bell provides financial counseling and basic living skills to their clients. They also have 14 group homes throughout the county. Please support this local mission through your gifts to the Special Benevolence part of the offering envelope this month. Thank you, the Missions Committee.

2012 Spring Grounds Cleanup

The Property Core has scheduled the 2012 Spring Grounds Cleanup for Saturday May 5th. We will begin at 8:00 AM with a target completion time of 11:30 AM. This year, the local Girl Scout Troop that meets at Mt. Zion will be helping with the Spring Clean as a service project. We pray for a good turnout of Mt. Zion Members. We need and appreciate your help, even if you can’t stay the entire morning.

Compassion Food Run

The Missions Committee first Compassion Food Run of this year is scheduled for Sunday, April 1st . This is one of the opportunities to help our friends and neighbors in the York community who are less fortunate than we are. For those willing to help with this outreach program in our own community, sign-up sheets are in the narthex for volunteers to cook and to serve, as well as a sign-up sheet for individuals who wish to donate food items. If you volunteer to help with the cooking, please be at the church by 2:30 PM. Those that volunteer to serve the meal should be at the church by 4:30 PM. We ask those who donate ground beef to precook (brown) the beef before bringing it to the church. As always, thank-you for your support of this community program. The Missions Committee

Extra folks for Easter

Hi Jack,

I know you will be training folks on Sunday. I was hoping you could help set up our Welcome Teams for Easter, April 8th, even if you are not here. I think, based upon our Christmas Even experience we may want to add a little extra that Sunday also. We will be doing something different. No breakfast, but food stations around the church with muffins & tea at one, bagels and juice at another, etc. and may want a few more folks. I share this with you in the hopes that you could speak with the folks on Sunday regarding that and maybe help devise a plan for special Sundays.

2012 WOW Kids

2012 WOW Kids—WOW (Worship Our Way) Kids is a program for the younger children of our congregation to participate in during the 10:30 worship service. After the children’s message, the kids go downstairs with Mrs. Sweeney for a lesson and snack. There is no sign up process – simply bring your child and we’ll do the rest!

WOW Kids will be the last Sunday of every month. The dates for the next few months are: March 25th, and April 29th. Also, on Sunday, April 1st (Palm Sunday), there will be a special program for children during the late worship service. See you there!

Holy Heat… Soup for the Soul!

Mark your calendar for Saturday, March 10th from 11 AM to 2 PM for our next Mt. Zion Holy Heat cook-off event. This year we will be tasting and voting on SOUP. If you have a favorite/famous soup recipe and you’d like to join the competition, sign up on the sheet in the side narthex. Include your contact information so we can communicate with you to review the rules of the game.

If you want to be a taster/voter, tickets will be available after each service in the weeks leading up to the event.Tickets ($5 per person) will also be on sale at the door.

Please come out to help crown Mt. Zion’s Soup Champion! Invite your friends and family to join us.

Easter Egg Hunt

The annual Mt. Zion UCC Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for Sunday, March 25 starting at 2 PM. We will have the age group egg hunts starting at 2 PM and refreshments in Fellowship Hall immediately following the Hunt. There are several ways to help!

1. Adults / high school volunteers are needed to over-see the age group egg hunts as well as serve as host / hostesses in the kitchen that day. We are hoping that the confirmands / high schoolers will also help stuff the eggs and set up the egg hunts outside after the late service that day.

2. Donations of candy / prizes are also needed - individually wrapped nut-free candy, small Easter related items for goodie bags such as stickers, bracelets, erasers, tattoos, etc.

Monetary donations will also be gladly accepted for the refreshments / paper products. The more donations, the better — we are going to advertise this Egg Hunt to the public, so put it on your calendars and bring all the kids!

Welcome Team Training

There will be training for new Welcome Team members (or old members who want to share their wisdom) on March 11th after the early and late services. This will only last 15-20 minutes, so if you would like to be on the Welcome Team, are thinking of being on the Welcome Team, have been asked to be on the Welcome Team, or have threatened to be on the Welcome Team but no one takes you seriously, come to one of the training sessions. Also, although it would be nice, training is not mandatory before serving on a Welcome Team. Instructions are posted on the inside of the acolyte closet, and here on Mt Zion's website. Knowledge is good — a welcoming attitude is better!

Lenten Dinners

Mar. 7th will be hosted by Church Council serving Lasagna. Proceeds to benefit Mt. Zion’s Current Fund.

Mar. 14th will be hosted by Friends of the Lakota’s serving Hot Dogs & Macaroni & Cheese. Proceeds to benefit Mt. Zion’s Mission Trip to the Lakota’s this summer.

Mar. 21st will be hosted by Mt. Zion’s 20:30 group serving Chicken Pot Pie & Salad. Proceeds to benefit Mt. Zion Youth.
