When Mt. Zion member, Lois Kindig died in May of 2009, she named Mt. Zion UCC and three other non-profit agencies (Fourth United Methodist, York County Area Agency on Aging, and York Rescue Mission) as the recipients of the residual amount from her estate. The residual amount being the amount remaining after designated beneficiaries received their portion of the estate. The will further stipulated that the residual amount be placed in a trust fund with the four agencies receiving equal shares of the interest earned from the trust fund for use in their various ministries. The establishment of this trust was intended to ensure the money would have a long lasting impact on the organization and not be used for current operations.
Following the disbursement to beneficiaries, the four non-profits petitioned the court to divest the trust. In order to do this each non-profit, named above, had to provide the court with a plan to establish a trust fund in which to maintain the designated contribution. Thanks to the foresight of Mt. Zion’s Investment Advisory Committee and the establishment of the Mt. Zion Endowment Fund with the York County Community Foundation, we had the framework already in place. Finally, at the end of June, 2011, the petition was approved by the Pa. Attorney General’s office and the local court resulting in each of the four agencies receiving $175,000.00 to be held in a trust fund as outlined by Mrs. Kindig’s desire in her will.
It is with much gratitude and appreciation, Mt. Zion has now received the designated contribution of $175,000.00 to the Mt. Zion Endowment Fund from the Lois E. Kindig Estate. If you have any questions about including the Endowment Fund in your estate or are interested in making a contribution, please contact a member of the Mt. Zion Investment Advisory Committee for more information.
