Framework for Ministry 2009-2010
One recurring comment we hear from our members is that they want to participate in the ministry of Mt. Zion, but without all the meetings. In fact, one of the recommendations of the York Association’s Listening Teams who conducted confidential interviews following Pastor Walter’s retirement was to “Undertake a complete review of committee structure, purpose, and duties.”
So, last year, we created Worship Ministry Teams to design and lead worship. Over 30 people participated (not including our choirs), greatly extending meaningful involvement beyond a traditional worship “committee,” while enhancing our collective worship experience.
Based on this success and on conversations we’ve had with other area churches, Council recently approved the development of a new model of governance involving six Core Areas of Ministry: Worship, Spiritual Formation, Community Life, Mission, Outreach, and Management.
During the next month, the Spiritual Formation, Worship and Community Life Cores will begin meeting. Representatives from our existing committees, groups and classes will:
(1) identify goals for the coming year
(2) review and evaluate events of previous year(s), and decide whether to continue, alter or discontinue
(3) determine what needs are not being met
(4) plan a calendar
(5) develop a budget
(6) select 2-3 people who, along with one member of Council, will serve as the Core Team for this particular area for the coming year.
They will meet as needed and will be consulted if any changes in the program are necessary.
The Managing Core – consisting of those standing committees responsible for the on-going care of the church, including Property, Finance, Investment Advisory, Memorials, Altar Guild, and Pastor-Parish Relations – will function as they have in the past.
It is hoped that this approach will involve more people and bring new vision and new approaches to the many ministries of Mt. Zion. We ask for your prayerful support.
Finally, many, many thanks to all who extended their committee terms into 2009 to help with this exciting transition. You have allowed Mt. Zion to maintain the many programs and services that are vital to the continued growth of our congregation.
