Mt. Zion’s Good Samaritan Fund – June Special Benevolence Offering

Your gifts to this month’s Special Benevolence offering support this local ministry of our church. It has been a long-standing fund established to provide discretionary funds administered by the pastors of the church to help members of the congregation, community by providing emergency funds when needed. A single mother, injured in an automobile accident, left unemployed for a period of time while recuperating needs some help with an electric bill. A family, working part-time jobs to make ends meet, encounters an illness that sets them back, their rent falls behind and there is fear of eviction. These are the stories we hear and the people we try to help with this fund. We are clear, it is not intended for on-going support. We make calls to utility companies and landlords to verify the information. With compassion and responsibility, we care for those around us thanks to your generosity to this fund.

Spread the LOVE!
Strengthen the Church Offering – June 12th

This is one of five special all church offerings of the United Church of Christ. Your gift will build the future of the United Church of Christ now by funding The Stillspeaking Ministry, by providing resources for new churches and to renew others, to support youth and young adult ministries as well as lay and pastoral leadership formation, especially among women and people of color. It sends a message of God’s extravagant welcome, reaching out especially to those who have felt excluded and alienated. Your gift will help spread God’s love!

Northeastern Food Pantry
During the month of June, we will be collecting anything you would like to contribute & place in our grocery cart to be donated to the Northeastern Food Pantry. During the month of April, we collected 14 boxes of potatoes & 5 cake mixes. In May, we collected 15 boxes of potatoes, 23 cake mixes, 3 cans of vegetables, 2 bottles of V8 juice & 1 box of instant oatmeal. Thank you for your generous ongoing support!

Cooks on the Road
Our team to go to Ronald McDonald House on June 26th is complete: Pastor Cathy, Ken Dunbar, Sherry Dunbar, Jim Shiffer, Kathy Sweeney and Barb Stebbins. We will meet briefly on June 12th, following the late service to plan the menu. On June 26th we will plan to leave following late worship and stop for lunch along the way, returning to Mt. Zion between 5 and 5:30 PM. There are still a few openings for our trip to RMH on August 14th. Sign up in the side narthex.

Blanket the World With Love!
Sunday, July 10th, we will receive your gifts to our special Blanket Sunday Offering. Mt. Zion has been a faithful supporter of this ministry of Church World Service for over twenty years and still, a $5 contribution will purchase one blanket. Last year we provided resources to purchase 378 blankets.

In 2010, CWS sent 300 blankets to the United Church of Christ in Pierre, South Dakota in response to winter storms. Another 300 blankets were sent to San Diego for homeless families. 60 blankets went to the Philadelphia area. 600 went to Arkansas following summer storms and tornadoes. Over 11,000 blankets were sent around the world and 6,755 were distributed throughout the United States to shelters and in response to disasters.

The need in 2011 is great due to the earthquake in Japan, the tornados and flooding we are experiencing in the U.S. Please give generously so others may know and feel some sense of comfort during a crucial time in their lives. (Envelopes for this special offering will be available at church during the month of July.)
