SPECIAL BENEVOLENCE OFFERING FOR SEPTEMBERYORK ASSOCIATION MICRO-LENDING PROJECT
Micro-lending provides low interest loans to help individuals, families and even villages in 3rd world countries work themselves out of poverty. Since 2003, Mt. Zion has been supporting OPPORTUNITY INTERNATIONAL, and have helped hundreds of poor people in the Dominican Republic, Ghana and Nicaragua. Four years ago, we joined with churches of the York Association to sponsor Trust Groups. Nineteen of our sister congregations have now joined us in this initiative, which has resulted in the establishment of fourteen Trust Groups in Africa. Currently, the Association has established 15Trust Banks through Opportunity International. For every $2 a church contributes to the York Association project, it is matched by $1.
Kenya: You helped prepare loan officers to empower clients like Rachel, an Opportunity Kenya loan client who invested loans to expand her farm, significantly increasing her monthly income. She also takes advantage of Opportunity Kenya’s cell phone banking technology. Without access to capital, Rachel found it impossible to earn a profit and become sustainable. She be-came a client about one year ago; today she is on her second loan cycle. With the help of her loan officer, she has received an education in financial principles and is investing in a loan of $400 to increase her number of chicks and piglets. She also plans to expand her operation by soon purchasing another pig shed.
We are also providing 759,815 families with the ability to save, indicating a tremendous demand among the poor for a place to hold and grow small deposits.
Please give generously to September’s special benevolence offering that provides people with a hand up not a handout.
