December Special Benevolence Offering: Salvation Army

The monthly mission for December is a long-standing charity in York – the Salvation Army. It provides support – physical, emotional and spiritual – to those who need it most. This is done through various program such as: family emergency services, food pantry, worship services, Hispanic community services, and the learning and community centers. Thank you in advance for your generous support of this charity.

January Special Benevolence Offering: Mt. Zion’s Disaster Relief Fund

Mt. Zion established this fund over six years ago when the tsunami and Hurricane Katrina occurred in the same year. The purpose of this fund was to have money readily available when disaster struck and to be able to respond quickly. Money from this fund over the past several years has been sent to UCC churches in Ohio to help with water damage due to flooding, for hurricane relief in Nicaragua, relief efforts after the Haitian earthquake, to the Red Cross in York for assistance following major fires in the city and most recently designated to help alleviate the famine in Africa. Please consider a gift to the Disaster Relief Fund and help build a fund that will make the Mt. Zion congregation proactive instead of reactive when it comes to disasters. Your financial gift will help those struggling to survive, give them hope and be an answer to a prayer when disaster strikes.

    Compassion Food Run

The Missions Committee’s last Compassion Food Run of this year is scheduled for Sunday, December 18th. This is one of the opportunities to help our friends and neighbors in the community who are less fortunate than us.

For those willing to help with this outreach program in our own community, sign-up sheets will be in the narthex beginning November 20th for volunteers to cook and to serve, as well as a sign-up sheet for individuals who wish to donate food items. If you volunteer to help with the cooking, please be at the church by 2:30 PM. Those that volunteer to serve the meal should be at the church by 4:30 PM.

We ask those who donate ground beef, to precook (brown) the beef before bringing it to the church.
As always, thank-you for your support of this community program. ~ The Missions Committee

    Northeastern Food Pantry

In December we will be collecting Hamburger Helper and boxed potatoes in our grocery card to be donated to the Northeastern Food Pantry. In January we will be collecting juice and hot chocolate mix. Thank you for your generous ongoing support!

    Church World Service Clean-Up Buckets

During the month of January, we will be collecting items to assemble Church World Service Clean-Up Buckets.

The supplies we collect will enable people to begin the overwhelming job of cleaning up after a flood, hurricane, tornado or other disaster. These buckets are used for disasters only in the United States. A list of needed items (per bucket) follows:

    Five scouring pads
    Seven sponges, assorted sizes
    One scrub brush
Eighteen cleaning towels (reusable, like Easy Wipes®)
One 50-78 oz. box dry laundry detergent
One 12 oz. bottle of liquid concentrated household cleaner (like Lysol®)
One 25 oz. bottle liquid disinfectant dish soap (like Dawn®)
    One Packages of 48-50 clothespins
Clotheslines, two 50 ft. or one 100 ft. per kit
    Five dust masks
Two pairs latex gloves (like Playtex®)
    One pair work gloves
28-bag roll of heavy-duty trash bags (30-45 gallon)
One 6-9 oz. bottle of insect repellent (pump, drops or lotion, not aerosol)

We can only send the items on the list, so please be specific in what you donate. Please note only the requested sizes for items will fit into the bucket. A sign-up sheet will be in the narthex. Each bucket costs $3.00 to ship. If you would like to make a monetary donation to help defray the shipping costs, a donation box is located in the narthex. Our goal is to fill ten (10) buckets!

Church World Service always has a great need for these clean-up buckets so we hope you will support this project to help our neighbors in the United States. Thank you.

    CROP Walk Results:

We had a Mt. Zion record of 29 Walkers including the following: Les & Doris Loucks, Red & Ellie Arnold, Ali & Joe Laughman, Diane Strine, The Tossey Family, The Grimes Family, Pastor Danielle, Sam, & Sari Dickey, Lou Loucks & Family, Kim Loucks, Amy Covert, Suzanne Skennonto, Nichole Beyer & Carlie Burk. These walkers raised $3,176 and note that this list includes some of Mt, Zion’s newest members, our daughter & daughter-in-law, our grandson, his wife and two daughters (our great granddaughters). It was a spectacular day for our walk and I am fairly certain that for the York City CROP walk we had the largest group of walkers and raised the most money to help the poor. Thank you to all the walkers and everyone that supported the walkers financially to help with their efforts to provide food and water to God’s poorest children. Les Loucks

  • We're ALL on the Welcome Team

Extravagant Welcome!  Remember the biblical account of the welcome extended by the woman who anointed Jesus’ feet with her tears and dried them with her hair (Luke 7:44-47)?  The Pharisee who was Jesus’ host considered this to be extravagant and inappropriate, especially because the woman was a sinner. But the guest of honor, Jesus, knew that the woman’s extravagant welcome was the result of her love for Jesus and an expression of her thanks for being forgiven.

Mt. Zion is in the process of learning to extend extravagant welcomes to our guests. We’re doing this for the same reason the woman did – to show our love for Jesus and as an expression of our thanks for being forgiven. As sinners extending extravagant welcomes, we show our guests that Mt. Zion is a place where all of God’s children are accepted.

The welcome we’ve extended in the past wasn’t wrong, but we can do even better! Our new process of welcome might seem overdone as far as some are concerned, but we’ve learned from reports of persons who have visited other churches that a casual, almost off-hand, welcome can leave a guest feeling isolated or unwanted. The reason we’re sharing this information is that we’ve also learned that all members of a congregation are part of the welcome team… whether they are officially “on duty” or not.

Proper attire is important. We’re told that guests feel more comfortable when they know someone’s name, so we’re asking members to wear their nametags. Welcome Team members who are on duty should also wear a “Welcome Team” tag.

Man your station. Members who are in the narthex should be on the lookout for people who seem unsure of where things are. With the winter months coming, guests will need to find out where we hang our coats. They might also need to know where the rest rooms are; our new signage is great, but having a personal escort is even better. Guests with children might need to know where our nursery is or will welcome the information about the children’s area if they want to feel part of the service but their child needs a break. Introduce yourself to guests and then introduce the guests to one of the pastors. Offer to sit next to someone so you can be helpful if they have questions about the service and earn extra “Extravagant Welcome Points!”

Welcome Team members who are on duty will be stationed at the main entrance door to the parking lot, at the top of the steps as a greeter, at the rear and side sanctuary doors to hand out bulletins. These people will be responsible for ensuring that guests are welcomed and sign the guest register. If a Welcome Team member must leave their post to escort a guest, members in the narthex should be ready to step into the vacant post.

It’s nothing personal. Welcome Team members who are on duty have committed themselves to be on the lookout to offer guests extravagant welcomes. This means that if you are engrossed in a conversation with a Welcome Team member, the Team member will interrupt your discussion to focus on a guest and engage them in conversation. Please don’t take this personally. You are undoubtedly important to the Welcome Team member, but their duties come first!

Welcome – it’s not just for Sundays anymore. In becoming more aware of when guests use our facility, we’ve come to realize that there are many opportunities for welcome teams to serve – weddings, funerals, community dinners, etc.  If you would be willing serve as a Welcome Team member for Sunday services or special functions, please contact Jack Herlocker at jherlocker@me.com or 600-2640.  The more, the merrier!

Special Benevolence Offerings in October & November:

October 2nd through 23rd: Our special benevolence offering will benefit the Mt. Zion Mission trip being planned to South Dakota in July of 2012. Your gifts will help to sponsor this meaningful ministry Mt. Zion has participated in for over fifteen years to our Native American brothers and sisters living on reservations there.

October 30th: The fifth Sunday in October your gifts to the Special Benevolence portion of the envelope will go to The UCC Christmas Fund. This fund provides supplements to pensions and health care for retired UCC pastors and their spouses.

November 6th through 27th: Your gifts throughout the month of November will be split between the Carlisle Truck Stop Ministry and Mt. Zion’s Adopt-A-Cabin.
The Truck Stop Ministry, located along the “Miracle Mile” in an area that has the heaviest trucker-trailer traffic along the East coast. The chaplain is available to truckers and travelers 24-7 to provide for their physical and spiritual needs. The chaplain provides transportation for truckers, who are on the road for 6-8 weeks at a time, to make needed trips doctors or pharmacies, etc. where they cannot go with their truck. The chaplain provides support in times of crisis to families who have come to the area to support a loved one.

Mt. Zion Adopt-a-Cabin. We provide the upkeep for one cabin at Hartman Center, the Penn Central Conference summer camp. Over the past ten years, we have replaced the bathroom, made changes to make the cabin handicapped accessible, and replaced the roof, carpeting and windows. Maintenance and upkeep is an ongoing project. Your gifts will provide the resources needed when a water heater needs replaced or other repairs are required.

MISSION: That they may all be 1.

Mt. Zion will be joining UCC congregations across the country to participate in this joint effort November 1 – 11, 2011 during which time ONE UNITED CHURCH will participate in a shared mission for 11 powerful days to feed the hungry and confront food-related injustice. During these 11 days, it is the goal of the United Church of Christ to:

    • Collect more than 1 million items of healthy food and other household items for local food banks. To this end, we will be “retiring” the shopping cart during the month of October and encourage our members to continue to purchase items for the Northeastern Food Pantry and bring them between Oct. 30th and November 11th.
    • Raise $111,111 for Neighbors In Need to support hunger action purposes with agencies of justice and compassion throughout the United States. We will receive your gifts to this special offering on November 6th.
    • Collectively send 11,111 letters to Congress encouraging more effective assistance for hungry and poor people around the world. We will provide copies of this letter in the narthex for people to address and send.

    ORT

Our children & grandchildren learned a lot about ort at church camp. The dictionary definition of ort is: a morsel of food left at a meal. Each meal the wasted food was weighed and it was celebrated when none was wasted. They could take what they could eat but were taught not to take more than they could eat. A good lesson for all of us.

What does that have to do with Mt. Zion???? There is a lot of wasted food in our kitchen. When you have a function here send the leftovers home with someone to use. DO NOT put it in the refrigerator/ freezer and hope that someone will use it. That doesn't happen and eventually it gets thrown out (ORT). If you have another function in the near future and will use it, label & date it.

Also of note, when making soup for care baskets please do not overfill as it expands when frozen and many lids pop off making it unusable. Also don't forget to label and date all items. Your gifts to this caring ministry are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for listening & blessings to you, Nancy Sleeger

    SPECIAL BENEVOLENCE OFFERING FOR SEPTEMBER
    YORK ASSOCIATION MICRO-LENDING PROJECT
Micro-lending provides low interest loans to help individuals, families and even villages in 3rd world countries work themselves out of poverty. Since 2003, Mt. Zion has been supporting OPPORTUNITY INTERNATIONAL, and have helped hundreds of poor people in the Dominican Republic, Ghana and Nicaragua. Four years ago, we joined with churches of the York Association to sponsor Trust Groups. Nineteen of our sister congregations have now joined us in this initiative, which has resulted in the establishment of fourteen Trust Groups in Africa. Currently, the Association has established 15Trust Banks through Opportunity International. For every $2 a church contributes to the York Association project, it is matched by $1.

Kenya: You helped prepare loan officers to empower clients like Rachel, an Opportunity Kenya loan client who invested loans to expand her farm, significantly increasing her monthly income. She also takes advantage of Opportunity Kenya’s cell phone banking technology. Without access to capital, Rachel found it impossible to earn a profit and become sustainable. She be-came a client about one year ago; today she is on her second loan cycle. With the help of her loan officer, she has received an education in financial principles and is investing in a loan of $400 to increase her number of chicks and piglets. She also plans to expand her operation by soon purchasing another pig shed.

We are also providing 759,815 families with the ability to save, indicating a tremendous demand among the poor for a place to hold and grow small deposits.

Please give generously to September’s special benevolence offering that provides people with a hand up not a handout.

  • Missions — June 2011

Thank you for your gifts to our One Great Hour of Sharing Offering. Receipts totaled $1,812.00.

Thank you for your gifts to our April Special Benevolence Offering: Mt. Zion Food Ministries. Receipts totaled $1,519.50.

Mt. Zion’s Good Samaritan Fund – June Special Benevolence Offering

Your gifts to this month’s Special Benevolence offering support this local ministry of our church. It has been a long-standing fund established to provide discretionary funds administered by the pastors of the church to help members of the congregation, community by providing emergency funds when needed. A single mother, injured in an automobile accident, left unemployed for a period of time while recuperating needs some help with an electric bill. A family, working part-time jobs to make ends meet, encounters an illness that sets them back, their rent falls behind and there is fear of eviction. These are the stories we hear and the people we try to help with this fund. We are clear, it is not intended for on-going support. We make calls to utility companies and landlords to verify the information. With compassion and responsibility, we care for those around us thanks to your generosity to this fund.

    Spread the LOVE!
Strengthen the Church Offering – June 12th

This is one of five special all church offerings of the United Church of Christ. Your gift will build the future of the United Church of Christ now by funding The Stillspeaking Ministry, by providing resources for new churches and to renew others, to support youth and young adult ministries as well as lay and pastoral leadership formation, especially among women and people of color. It sends a message of God’s extravagant welcome, reaching out especially to those who have felt excluded and alienated. Your gift will help spread God’s love!

    Northeastern Food Pantry
During the month of June, we will be collecting anything you would like to contribute & place in our grocery cart to be donated to the Northeastern Food Pantry. During the month of April, we collected 14 boxes of potatoes & 5 cake mixes. In May, we collected 15 boxes of potatoes, 23 cake mixes, 3 cans of vegetables, 2 bottles of V8 juice & 1 box of instant oatmeal. Thank you for your generous ongoing support!

    Cooks on the Road
Our team to go to Ronald McDonald House on June 26th is complete: Pastor Cathy, Ken Dunbar, Sherry Dunbar, Jim Shiffer, Kathy Sweeney and Barb Stebbins. We will meet briefly on June 12th, following the late service to plan the menu. On June 26th we will plan to leave following late worship and stop for lunch along the way, returning to Mt. Zion between 5 and 5:30 PM. There are still a few openings for our trip to RMH on August 14th. Sign up in the side narthex.

    Blanket the World With Love!
Sunday, July 10th, we will receive your gifts to our special Blanket Sunday Offering. Mt. Zion has been a faithful supporter of this ministry of Church World Service for over twenty years and still, a $5 contribution will purchase one blanket. Last year we provided resources to purchase 378 blankets.

In 2010, CWS sent 300 blankets to the United Church of Christ in Pierre, South Dakota in response to winter storms. Another 300 blankets were sent to San Diego for homeless families. 60 blankets went to the Philadelphia area. 600 went to Arkansas following summer storms and tornadoes. Over 11,000 blankets were sent around the world and 6,755 were distributed throughout the United States to shelters and in response to disasters.

The need in 2011 is great due to the earthquake in Japan, the tornados and flooding we are experiencing in the U.S. Please give generously so others may know and feel some sense of comfort during a crucial time in their lives. (Envelopes for this special offering will be available at church during the month of July.)

  • Missions — May 2011

Special Benevolence Offering: Homewood Retirement Homes Benevolent Fund ~ May 1 to May 22

In 1932, George Pearson, an elder in the Cavetown Christ Reformed Church, left a sizeable bequest to start a home for widows and spinsters of the church. Because of Pearson’s gift, Homewood Homes, our United Church of Christ site, exists nearly eight decades later.

At Homewood, no resident is ever asked to leave because he or she has run out of funds. The Benevolent Fund established at Homewood provides for them as long as they live at the site.
That is why your donations this month are very appreciated. Please give generously to the Homewood Homes Benevolent Fund. Thank you!

Psalm 71:9 ~ “Do not cast me away when I am old; do not forsake me when my strength is gone.”

Holy Joe’s Café ~ Coffee for the Troops
Special Benevolence Offering for May 29th

What began in 2006 as a coffee drive within the church family of First Congregational UCC in Connecticut to collect and ship coffee to assist military chaplains in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait, has broadened through the support of many other UCC congregations like ours. Our troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait find themselves in difficult and life threatening situations taking an extreme physical, emotional and psychological toll on them. Our chaplains are the first line of defense against issues faced by our troops. Through Holy Joe’s Café Ministry, the support that is offered to them has grown to assist over 120 chaplains. Please give generously to this ministry as our Special Benevolence Offering on the 29th of May.

    Chop & Peel Soup Kitchen
We will again have Soup Kitchen Chop & Peel on Monday May 30th which is Memorial Day & we may need some additional help because of the holiday. I know we just had it in March, but it is the way the calendar falls so please continue to sign up to donate food. The sign up is in the narthex and thank you for your ongoing support. They love the beef stew because they get so many pasta dishes. ~ Nancy Sleeger

    Northeastern Food Pantry
During the month of May, we will be collecting cake mixes in our grocery cart to be donated to the Northeastern Food Pantry. During the month of March, we collected 91 boxes of Jell-O & pudding, 19 boxes of spaghetti, 2 boxes of macaroni, 4 jars spaghetti sauce, 10 cans of tuna fish, 3 cans of chicken, 2 Healthy Choice meals, 2 cans of hot chocolate, 1 box of tissues and 1 roll of paper towels. During the month of April, we collected 14 boxes of potatoes & 5 cakes mixes. Thank you for your nerous ongoing support!

Thank you for your gifts to our March

Special Benevolence Offering: Mt. Zion’s Disaster Relief Fund. Receipts totaled $1,637.75.

Thank you for your gifts to our One Great Hour of Sharing Offering. Receipts totaled $1,762.00.

    4 Our Churches Update
At the end of the first quarter in the new year, Mt. Zion has forwarded an additional $5,590.54 to Penn Central Conference toward our annual goal of $20,000. Of the remaining $14,409.46, we have members who have pledged $5,934.16 for the year, which means we only have to raise $8,475.30 to meet our annual goal. Thank you to everyone who is contributing their time, talents and treasures to fulfill this pledge.
Jim Groff, Jim Shiffer & Deb Herlocker

    Cook’s On the Road
Once again, Mt. Zion’s cooks are heading to the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey to prepare the evening meal Sunday, June 26th and Sunday, August 14th. We leave Mt. Zion after the late service and pick up lunch on the way. We arrive at RMH around 1 PM and begin cooking. We plan the meal ahead of time and bring the ingredients needed. The meal is to be ready by 5 PM. After setting out the food, we head home.
No Experience needed, just folks of all ages who want to participate in this outreach ministry and share in fellowship with one another. A sign up sheet is in the side narthex.

Mt. Zion Is Sending Four “Littles” from Big Brother-Big Sister to Camp
Thanks to a fund established in memory of D. Clyde & E. Joann Long, we are able to send young people from Big Brother-Big Sister to enjoy a week at Hartman Center in Milroy, Pa. In addition to providing the funds for them to go, we have provided transportation. They go to camp on a Sunday afternoon and come home the following Saturday morning. Someone from Big Brother-Big Sister picks them up at their home and brings them to the church around 2 PM on the Sunday they begin camp.

We have one young man going June 26th and returning July 2nd, and three children, two boys and a girl, leaving July 17th and returning July 23rd. This has been a wonderful experience for all involved and a simple but meaningful way to be involved in this mission. If you are interested in providing transportation, please contact Doris Loucks. It is the policy of BB-BS that all drivers have clearance. It is a simple procedure and we have the form required if you have not already obtained clearance. Please consider being involved in this ministry of Mt. Zion!

    Spaghetti Dinner a Success!
The Confirmation Class did a great job planning, preparing, and host- ing the Spaghetti Dinner and Talent Show that was held on March 19th. Not only did we enjoy the wonderful food, but we also enjoyed listening to talented musicians: Jack Kollasch, Emily Schriver, Mason DeMers, Steve Tossey, and Ashley Thompson. A special thank you to all those who helped organized—especially the confirmands and their parents! Thank you also, to all those Mt. Zion members who donated supplies! Through our efforts, we were able to rise a total of $512. The Confirmands voted that half of these proceeds would go to the Mt. Zion Current Fund while the other half would go to the United Negro College Fund. Congratulations to all for a successful and fun fellowship event! Well done!

April Special Benevolence Offering: Mount Zion Food Ministries

This ministry combines Chop and Peel, Compassion York Food Run, Ronald McDonald House and other food related programs. When food donations fall short, the necessary food items must then be purchased. This outreach ministry helps to fill the growing need in our community. Fifty percent of the people fed are children. Your financial gift will help those struggling to survive by providing one of the basics in life – food. You will give them hope – that someone cares, and your gift – may be an answer to a prayer. God bless you for your kind and generous spirit. ~ Missions Committee

One Great Hour of Sharing Offering is Sunday, April 3. Offering envelopes were included in your March Spirit. Additional envelopes will be available in the narthex.

Thank you for your gifts to our February Special Benevolence Offering: Northeastern Food Pantry. Receipts totaled $1,436.50.

Thank you for your donations to the CWS Clean-Up Buckets project. Because of your generous support, we will be able to send at least 12 buckets to disaster areas around the United States. Our goal was 10 buckets. Thank you so much!

    Compassion Food Run
The Missions Committee is scheduled for another Compassion Food Run to help those who are less fortunate than us. The first meal for 2011 is scheduled for Sunday, April 17th.

For those willing to help with this need, sign-up sheets will be in the narthex for volunteers to cook and serve, as well as a sign-up sheet for those individuals willing to donate food items. If you plan to help with the cooking, please be at the church by 2:30 PM. Those who sign up to serve the meal should be at the church by 4:30 PM.

Thank-you again for your ongoing support.

March Special Benevolence Offering: Mt. Zion’s Disaster Relief Fund

Mt. Zion established this fund six years ago when the tsunami and Hurricane Katrina occurred in the same year. The purpose of this fund was to have money readily available when disaster struck and to be able to respond quickly. Money from this fund over the past several years has been sent to UCC churches in Ohio to help with water damage due to flooding, for hurricane relief in Nicaragua, relief efforts after Haitian earthquake, and to the Red Cross in York for assistance following major fires in the city. Please consider a gift to the Disaster Relief Fund and help build a fund that will make the Mt. Zion congregation proactive instead of reactive when it comes to disasters. Your financial gift will help those struggling to survive, give them hope and be an answer to a prayer.

One Great Hour of Sharing Offering – Sun. April 3rd

OGHS is administered by Wider Church Ministries of the United Church of Christ and provides support to people in over 80 countries. When we gift to the OGHS offering, we become partners in the refugee, disaster relief, and community development efforts of the UCC in the United States and internationally.
Several months ago, Pakistan, a country already experiencing hardship due to conflict, was devastated by flooding. OGHS funds enabled the distribution of 16,540 food packages for the benefit of 91,200 people. Temporary shelter supplies, household goods, medical supplies and 500 tents were also made avail-able. Your gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing are utilized on average every 2.5 days to respond to disaster. Around the world, around the year, OGHS changes lives.

Thank you for your generous ongoing support!

Please sign up to supply the food and please note that the amounts have increased because we will be cooking stew for the Lenten dinner Wednesday March 30th so that you can taste what we serve at the Soup Kitchen four times a year. We thank you for your ongoing support of this mission as we begin our 21st year.

    Mission Grant Distributions

When the Endowment Fund was established several years ago, the congregation voted to designate 15% of each annual distribution to local mission projects and 15% to global ministries of the church. The Missions Committee prepared Mission Grant Guidelines and Request forms for members of the congregation to complete and submit for the distribution of these funds. In 2010, we received $4,800 to be divided equally for local and global missions. The Mission Core Team solicited Grant applications from the congregation in November and December and met Jan. 16th to determine the recipients. Monies remaining from the 2009 distribution plus that from 2010 were designated as follows:
    • Local Mission: $2000 to Compassion-York to pay for liability insurance they are required to carry. Compassion-York is referred to as the “food run” ministry Mt. Zion has participated in for over ten years. We prepare a meal at the church and go to two locations in the city to serve meals.
    • Global Mission: $2,500 to Penn Central Conference’s 4 Our Churches as part of Mt. Zion’s goal for that campaign and $1000 to the Cheyenne River Pro-ject to purchase computers for a youth center for Native American youth in South Dakota.

Mission Grant Application forms (green papers) are located on the table in the narthex. If you are aware of a need in the community, please complete a form and return it to the church office. In the past, Mt. Zion has used these monies to make significant contributions to the Inspiring Hope playground at Cousler Park, to the Northeastern Senior Center Meals on Wheels program to provide meals for seniors who were dropped from the program due to decreased funding, to the Northeastern Food Pantry for prescription assistance, and to the UCC Refugee Resettlement program. Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote, “The church is only the church when it exists for others.” We are thankful for the foresight when this fund was established that enables us to assist in these ministries.

February Special Benevolence Offering: Northeastern Food Pantry

Our monthly mission for February is the Northeastern Food Pantry. The pantry is located at our sister church, Starview United Church of Christ.

In 2010, they provided food to 1,120 families. They also provide limited aid for heating oil, rent, prescription drugs, etc. Their clients are mostly in the Northeastern School District and extend into the Central School District. In these hard times, the need is growing all the time. They receive some of their donations from the York Food Bank and churches in the surrounding area, including our church.

Please support this much needed mission. Thank you.

    The Missions Core Group

    Church World Service Clean-Up Kits

During the month of February, we will be collecting items to assemble Church World Service Clean-Up Buckets.

The supplies we collect will enable people to begin the overwhelming job of cleaning up after a flood, hurricane, tornado or other disaster. These buckets are used for disasters only in the United States.
A list of needed items follows:

    Scouring pads
    Sponges, assorted sizes
    Scrub brushes
Cleaning towels (reusable, like Easy Wipes®
50-78 oz. boxes dry laundry detergent
12 oz. bottles of liquid concentrated household cleaner (like Lysol®)
25 oz. bottles liquid disinfectant dish soap (like Dawn®)
    Packages of 48-50 clothespins
Clotheslines, two 50 ft. or one 100 ft. per kit
    Dust masks
    Latex gloves (like Playtex®)
    Work gloves
28-bag rolls of heavy-duty trash bags (30-45 gallon)
6-9 oz. bottles of insect repellent (pump, drops or lotion, not aerosol)

We can only send the items on the list, so please be specific in what you donate. Only the requested items will fit into the bucket. A sign-up sheet will be in the narthex. Each bucket costs $3.00 to ship. If you would like to make a monetary donation to help defray the shipping costs, a donation box is located in the narthex. Our goal is to fill ten (10) buckets!

Church World Service always has a great need for these clean-up buckets so we hope you will sup-port this project to help our neighbors in the United States. Thank you.

    Mt. Zion’s Good Samaritan Fund
    December Special Benevolence Offering

The man in the middle of the highway was a stranger to the Samaritan yet he went out of his way to care for this person in great need. The Samaritan changed his travel plans and provided for the man’s safety and well-being. The Samaritan did not ignore him but reached out with love and compassion which is why this story has been identified as the Good Samaritan. This fund has been established to provide assistance with food, utilities, rent, essential auto repairs and many other day to day needs of people in this community. In these economic times, the struggle becomes even more challenging for some. Support of this fund is one way in which we as a congregation reach out and help instead of looking the other way to our neighbors and friends in need. Thank you for your gift to the Good Samaritan Fund!

    Bringing Christmas to Homewood!

Everyone is invited to participate in the Santa’s List Christmas Project for Homewood Homes. Participants would purchase a small gift item for a resident, usually in the $5.00 price range. If you would like to buy a gift for a resident, simply sign up in the back of the Sanctuary on November 28th. Gifts need to be returned by December 5th so that they can be delivered to the residents.

Making Christmas Brighter for Families in our Community
This year, the Missions Core has chosen to sponsor three families in our immediate community. You are invited to select a star from the tree in the narthex. Each star will identify a type of gift such as clothing, an entertainment item such as a toy, book or game, and toiletry items. You are asked to return the gift in a gift bag with the star attached to the bag and place it under the tree by Sunday, December 19th.

    SPECIAL BENEVOLENCE OFFERING FOR NOVEMBER
    YORK ASSOCIATION MICRO-LENDING PROJECT

Micro-lending provides low interest loans to help individuals, families and even villages in 3rd world countries work themselves out of poverty. Since 2003, Mt. Zion has been supporting OPPORTUNITY INTERNATIONAL, and have helped hundreds of poor people in the Dominican Republic, Ghana and Nicaragua. Three years ago, we joined with churches of the York Association to sponsor Trust Groups. Nineteen of our sister congregations have now joined us in this initiative, which has resulted in the establishment of eleven Trust Groups in Africa. Currently, the Association is very close to establishing our 14th Trust Bank through Opportunity International. For every $2 a church contributes to the York Association project, it is matched by $1.
The 2009 Annual Report from Opportunity International is entitled: “Helping Communities Thrive.”
Believe in Rosemary to transform a generation. Forty years she opened a small school for infants. Today, thanks to tireless determination and several loans from Opportunity International, Rosemary has five permanent buildings for her elementary school and orphanage in Uganda.
Sugey lives in Columbia. One day ten armed guerrillas stormed their house. The next day, they fled for safety. For several years they lived in a shantytown with no water or sewage system. In 2008, she learned about Opportunity International and she now has renewed hope. Her sandal business has already grown and she has repaid her first loan of $109.
Please give generously to this month’s special benevolence offering that provides people with a hand up not a handout.

The Neighbors In Need offering of the United Church of Christ supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States.
Each year 1/3 of this offering goes to support the UCC Council of American Indians Ministry (CAIM) and the 20 UCC congregations in South Dakota, Wisconsin and Nebraska.
Two-thirds of the offering supports a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts and direct service projects. In 2009, your gifts helped support Family Promise of Harrisburg, Pa. which is a community response to homeless families; Mazzoni Center in Philadelphia, an LGBT health care center; a coalition of churches in Vermont that work for justice and peace and numerous food banks. Your gift to this special all-church offering on October 3rd will help your neighbors in need here in Central Pennsylvania and through the United States.

The Christmas Fund of the U.C.C. – 5th Sunday Offering
This fund provides supplements to pensions and health care for retired UCC pastors and their spouses. In 1959 Paul started ministry serving small churches that did not pay much. In the early 1970’s he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and eventually had to stop working. Because of his illness, he was not able to contribute much toward his pension account and most of their saving went to pay for Paul’s care. This year, approximately 1500 people, like Paul, will receive assistance through The Christmas Fund. Rev. H.G. Anderson, 91 years old and a recipient of the fund says, “You can’t give a better gift to ministers or their spouses who have meager income and can’t make ends meet without it. It’s our Christian responsibility.” Please give generously to this 5th Sunday Special Benevolence Offering. Thank You! The Missions Committee.

September Special Benevolence Offering: Salvation Army

The monthly mission for September is a longstanding charity in York — the Salvation Army. It provides support — physical, emotional and spiritual — to those who need it most. This is done through various program such as: family emergency services, food pantry, worship services, Hispanic community services, and the learning and community centers. Our donations can be designated to a specific program. As September is associated with back-to-school, our donations will be going to the learning center. It provides after school programs, tutors and mentors to children who may not have the support at home they need to be successful in school… and in life. Thank you in advance for your generous support of this charity.
